Guumali
to gather
A gathering place dedicated to amplifying First Nation people's voices, aspirations + ideas, enabling self-determination + honoring agency.
Gulbiyaay to Guumali
Guumali was founded to meet the urgent need for a First Nations-led approach—one that thinks in generations, not political cycles—to overcome the systemic challenges facing our communities.
Guumali is a cultural innovation and impact studio—a space where ideas, wisdom, and collaboration converge. Proudly First Nations, we are dedicated to amplifying the voices, aspirations, and knowledge systems within our communities. We foster self-determination, celebrate cultural strength, and honour both individual and collective agency.
Created by and for First Nations people, we work alongside communities and allies to build thriving futures, dismantle broken systems, and uncover bold, place-based solutions rooted in culture and self-determination.
and this…
WE BELIEVE THAT A PROSPEROUS FUTURE HINGES ON THE IMAGININGS OF THOSE IN THE MARGINS.
Meet our founder
Gamilaroi woman from NSW, Sorrell’s connection to country and family extends along the banks of the Namoi river in Walgett, and the Murrumbidgee. Her passion for justice and equity stems from witnessing the impacts of economic exclusion, racism, and discrimination firsthand. Stories of her grandmother’s unpaid labor and her father’s missed educational opportunities drive her commitment to transformative change.
With a career centered on championing the self-determination of First Nations people, Sorrell has advocated for Aboriginal communities across remote NT, shaped policy at state and national levels, and bridged the gap between community and the private sector. As the founder of Guumali, she ignites Aboriginal-led social innovation, fostering independent economies and solutions to the most pressing socio-economic challenges.
Sorrell is an AMP Tomorrow Maker, GAICD and Maniifera Social Justice Partner.
